Inspiring Educators: Weekly Roundup 9/7/18

Who has inspired you? This week, check out a few inspirational educators we’ve learned about, from a heart-wrenching personal tale of loss and success to an educator who is willing to try his hand at rapping to get students to learn. We hope these stories inspire you!

One Hamilton County School Director is getting students attention by using rap to teach. Dr. Larrie Reynolds, a former music teacher, wanted to find a way to get kids engaged in their learning. Knowing kids’ love of hip-hop, he came up with a solution that has proved to be inspiring. Learn about his methods in this article.

Every year at Plymouth schools in Massachusetts, superintendent Gary Maestas creates a presentation to inspire staff and students at the beginning of the school year. This year, his presentation has done that and more; resulting in a video that has gone viral. After sharing his own learning struggles, students of all ages performed a version of ‘This Is Me’, from the motion picture ‘The Greatest Showman,’ in front of the school. Watch the video and read Maestas story.

Teacher of the year Mandy Manny had inspired Bill Gates to write about what she has taught him. Manning has worked hard to help support and welcome students that have fled war-torn and poverty-stricken lands, and arrived in her school, unable to speak English. Her mindset? “To be welcomed with open arms and to know that people want you there; that is going to make a tremendous difference in how they interact in their new community … how they move forward in life.” Read her story, and what she does to support her students.
